It's Easter Week, so as I was preparing for these updates, I definitely have the Cross on my mind. Always have to go there first on Friday, before you get to healing on Sunday. And since what we pray about for our sweet cancer warriors is always for healing - I thought I would talk a little bit about a key ingredient of it: surrender.
Actually, my best friend just reminded me of it, while she was telling me about her reading in Scripture this morning. She was reading from Matthew 26, when Christ was in the Garden of Gethsemane and His progression of "getting there" to submit to the Father's Will. Unfortunately, the Father's Will included a horrific execution that awaited Him as He cried blood in anguish, thinking about it. But fortunately, for us, He went through with it.
How did He get there?
At first He asked God to not to have to do.
Then He asked God if there was another way.
Finally, He committed Himself to seeing it through because His time was almost up.
God said no to His beloved Son so He could say yes to us. Yes to healing we couldn't experience before. Yes to a life fully lived, spiritually, mentally and physically. Yes to life beyond the here and now. So many yes's came from that one No - such beautiful, bountiful blessings from that one curse.
Because Jesus surrendered to the path His Father had laid out for Him, we are eternally saved. It is not a path of suffering that many people have to walk - but our friends fighting cancer do. So, my prayer today would be for them to be able to follow in Christ's footsteps. That they would be able to surrender their will to God's, even when they don't want to and would prefer any other way for their children to be healed than chemo, radiation and all that comes along with it; but in the end, these parents have the faith to commit to the path The Lord has laid out for them.
It's a simple prayer, but there are so many ways to be blessed in it. God will honor their obedience and use their story to bring others close to Him. It will happen. Our family is living proof of that. But it is the hardest yes to say - to God and the suffering He has allowed. Thankfully, we do not serve a God Who has no idea what it's like.
He knows exactly what suffering is like and I pray they will feel His presence throughout their trial. It reminds me of the lines in the new MercyMe song "The Hurt and the Healer",
When glory meets my suffering....
It’s the moment when humanity
Is overcome by majesty
When grace is ushered in for good
And all our scars are understood....
So, let's pray for this for these parents this Easter Week because PRAYER WORKS!!
