I love Tony Evan's radio ministry, when I can catch it in the car. (Sophia calls him the angry guy - but I always tell her he is just excited about God.) He is currently on a series about the names of God.
Thus far, I've heard him cover Elohim (Creator God); Jehovah (Personal God); and Adonai (Master or Owner God).
Last week, during the message on Jehovah, he said that lots of people believe in Elohim (as in "There is a God.") but not many people have a personal relationship with the God Who has revealed Himself - Jehovah. That struck me. Then this morning, he said that you will get more personal revelation of God when you let Him be your Adonai - or Master. He explained that means giving God complete ownership over your life. When you limit what you surrender to The Lord, you limit how much of Him you get in your life from a fire hose down to a trickle. He went on to site Abraham and Moses as examples of those faithful who could not do what The Lord (Elohim as Jehovah) commanded them to do - so they called Him Lord, or Adonai.
His point was, if we gave over ownership of our life and circumstances to God - then everything we face, especially those situations that we cannot handle in our own strength - we could have peace. Why?
Because we would no longer be responsible for the outcome.
When we first moved back to the States from Trinidad, we rented a house till we found one we wanted to purchase. It was an immense relief to me that when things did go wrong - I could call someone else to take care of it. It wasn't my responsibility to make it better. I'm not good with repairmen to start with, so to know that a more powerful entity (in this case the property management rep) could negotiate for my relief was a tremendous weight off my shoulders.
When Evans mentioned this analogy, it made perfect sense. And something clicked. If we could put the responsibility for taking us through cancer; for having the wisdom to know what to do in treatment; to put the burden of healing these kids on God's shoulders rather than our own (or those of a medical team) - what a relief! It might take a leap of faith to do that, but I know that our choice to keep believing in God for Sophia's health, entrusting her to our Master, brought and continues to bring much needed peace to our weary souls.
Maybe you know Jesus personally. I would encourage you to make Him Lord over everything in your life, your job, your marriage, your relationships, your finances and especially the care of your children - whether they have cancer or not. As Natalie and I read today in some rare and sweet shared devotional time, the time is short. The window of opportunity is closing. Now is the time to trust Him with it all. It is hard, but He will give you the strength to do it. He did it for me.
He will do it for you.

Being able to list the names of God and state their meanings is only the starting point. We need to get beyond a cerebral understanding of the names of God.
