As
if you didn't know, we are coming up on Christmas. When you have a
child in treatment, this is possibly the most bittersweet, difficult
time of the year. If your child is healthy, it will be a good
Christmas. If your child is not, it will be stressful and full of
frustration. If you think having to deal with extended family over the
holidays is bad, I can assure you, it is much preferred than spending
Christmas in the hospital!
We were at home on Christmas Day last year, but back in-patient with Sophia 3 days later for another round of chemo. There is a never ending cloud that hangs over you but there is something that keeps coming to me over and over again. There are a lot of radiothons and fundraisers going on right now for cancer research - and these families, dealing with their family in turmoil, consistently step up and lead the charge. They are making pediatric cancer part of our social consciousness. There is no greater gift we can give than working to find solutions and a cure, so please support these families where you can!
I think what I would like to pray for these kids for Christmas is that, whether they are home or in-patient, they can celebrate. They can celebrate the incarnation of Christ, the ultimate Healer for our whole universe. They can head into 2012 with the hope of remission. They can find the peace that transcends all understanding, let themselves be served by others and find the strength through Jesus to seek everything they need.
Before we pray, there is one more thing you can do for one of the young men we pray for. Would you consider going to this link and voting for Addison Marshall to win the Rudy Award? Make sure you view the video that talks about his story, which I've included here:
