The summer bug hit me again last week - sorry for no updates! It's hard managing to our schedule and it is going to get a little more complicated as the summer moves on. In fact, right now my kids are multi-tasking, eating breakfast and doing their summer homework before we have to leave for a packed schedule of doctor's appointments and swim lessons and whatnot. Yes, I said whatnot. That is what most of our day seems to fill up with and I gotta believe somewhere in that big pile of whatnot is something of eternal value.
As I contemplate depending more on Jesus to get me through the whatnot, to give me an opportunity to practice my faith in the every day (because when you are in treatment, you have MORE than enough chances to practice total surrender), I wonder what He thinks of my striving. I think it pleases Him that I want to, but He knows I need more than WANT TO in order for my faith to grow. That is where His Spirit must come in and remind me to keep my focus, like Peter out on the water, on Him rather than my day swirling with whatnot around me.
Sophia just pointed out that Jesus was just a guy sleeping on a bean bag during a storm. Apparently, she was paying attention on Sunday during the sermon. But Natalie filled in the gaps for her, telling her that Jesus had faith in God so we must have it too. We must depend on Him having so much more knowledge, wisdom and vision about our lives than we do. In crisis mode, I found that was really easy to believe. But as life has settled back away from the chaos of cancer therapy, I find myself more and more dependent on what I can accomplish during the day. It is a lesson affirmed by the devotional entry for today in Jesus Calling and it is appropriate for anyone, in crisis or everyday mode:

Stay calmly conscious of Me, today, no matter what. Remember that I go before you as well as with you into the day. Nothing takes Me by surprise. I will not allow circumstances to overwhelm you, so long as you look to Me. I will help you cope with whatever the moment presents. Collaborating with Me brings blessings that far outweigh all your troubles. Awareness of My Presence contains Joy that can endure all eventualities.
Even though most of us will be going about our day in the "normal" way, let us pray for these families that they can find the Joy that resides through faith in Christ, the Joy that can endure chemo, radiation, blood counts, transfusions, injections, spinal taps, side effects, travel, exhaustion and anything else cancer tries to throw at them!
Let's pray because PRAYER WORKS!
